View Windows system and application event logs.

Updated September 2, 2026Difficulty: EasyTime: 6 minApplies to: Windows, Windows 10, Windows 11

Follow the steps in order and stop if the screen or target does not match what is described. Use administrator access only when the task requires it.

Open Event Viewer

Press Windows + R, enter eventvwr.msc, and press Enter.

Command
eventvwr.msc

Choose a log

Expand Windows Logs and select Application or System.

Use the time and source

Match the event time and source to the problem. One error alone does not prove the cause.

Copy details safely

Use Copy > Copy details as text and remove account names, paths, or other private data before sharing.

Do not clear logs while diagnosing

Clearing a log removes useful history and requires administrator access.
