Event Viewer

Event Viewer is the Windows tool for reading event logs recorded by the system, applications and services.

Event Viewer instructions, reference material, and troubleshooting.

Which events should I examine first?

Start with the time the user observed the problem and the application or service involved. Record the event source, ID, time and message together. An old error or an unrelated warning is not enough to identify the cause of today's problem.

What should I keep before trying a repair?

Keep the relevant event details and the steps that reproduce the problem. Logs can contain device or user information, so review an export before sharing it. After the repair, repeat the task and check for a matching new event rather than expecting historical errors to disappear.
