Windows Services

A Windows service is a program managed by Windows that can run in the background without an open application window.

Windows Services instructions, reference material, and troubleshooting.

What should I check before restarting a service?

Check its name, current state, dependencies and the people using it. Restarting a print, database or remote-access service can interrupt other work or your support connection. Use the service guide to inspect the target before making an authorized change.

Does a stopped service always mean something is wrong?

No. Some services start only when a feature needs them. Compare the service state with the task that fails and any relevant error before changing its startup type. After a change, test the affected feature as well as the service state.
