Which IP address should I check?
Check the adapter carrying the connection you are troubleshooting, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A PC can also have VPN and virtual adapters. Record the address, subnet mask and default gateway together so you can distinguish the active connection from an unused adapter.
Does a local IP address prove internet access works?
No. An address describes one part of the connection; it does not prove the gateway, DNS or a particular website is reachable. Start with the address guide, then follow the networking guides for the specific connection that fails.
