Users & Groups

User accounts identify people or services on a computer; groups collect accounts so permissions can be assigned together.

Users & Groups instructions, reference material, and troubleshooting.

Am I changing a local account or an organization account?

Confirm where the account is managed before editing it. A local Windows account and an account managed by an organization can use different tools and policies. Record the account name and intended access without collecting or sharing its password.

Should I add the user to Administrators?

Check which permission the task actually needs first. Administrator membership grants broad control and may exceed the intended access. Use the approved account-management process and verify the required task with the user's account after an authorized change.
