**Before you begin**


Save open work. Confirm that you are working on the intended computer and that you are authorized to make the change.




## Open Event Viewer




Press Windows + R, enter eventvwr.msc, and press Enter.

## Choose a log




Expand Windows Logs and select Application or System.




## Use the time and source




Match the event time and source to the problem. One error alone does not prove the cause.




## Copy details safely




Use Copy \> Copy details as text and remove account names, paths, or other private data before sharing.




## Do not clear logs while diagnosing




Clearing a log removes useful history and requires administrator access.
