# Command Prompt

Command Prompt is the Windows command-line shell used to run commands, batch files and diagnostic tools.

Command Prompt instructions, reference material, and troubleshooting.

## When should I use Command Prompt?

Use Command Prompt when a guide calls for a Windows command or a .bat file. Start with commands that display information, then check the expected output before making a change. An ordinary prompt is enough for many checks; open an administrator prompt only when the task requires it.

## Can I use the same command in PowerShell?

Some commands work in both shells, but quoting, variables and built-in commands differ. Follow the shell named in the guide. Use the PowerShell category for PowerShell syntax and the clearly marked legacy guides when maintaining an existing WMIC script.
