Follow the steps in order and stop if the screen or target does not match what is described. Use administrator access only when the task requires it.

**Before you begin**

Save open work. Confirm that you are working on the intended computer and that you are authorized to make the change.

## Treat WMIC as legacy

The utility is unavailable on current Windows 11 releases. Keep these examples only for understanding older scripts.

## Recognize the legacy pattern

Older scripts used wmic /node:PC-NAME os get Caption,Version. Do not place plaintext passwords on the command line.

## Create a modern session

Use a managed WinRM configuration and an explicit target.

Command

```
$session = New-CimSession -ComputerName PC-NAME
```

## Run the equivalent query

Use structured output instead of parsing columns.

Command

```
Get-CimInstance -CimSession $session Win32_OperatingSystem | Select-Object Caption, Version
```

## Close the session

Remove it after the bounded task.

Command

```
Remove-CimSession $session
```

## Protect the boundary

Never expose DCOM or WinRM to the public internet merely to preserve an old script.

**Verify the result**

Repeat the relevant check and confirm the intended result before considering the task complete.
