Drive optimization

# Analyze and optimize a Windows drive.

Updated
October 5, 2026

Open Defragment and Optimize Drives, select the local drive, and choose Optimize. For an elevated command prompt, use defrag C: /O /U /V so Windows applies the operation appropriate to the drive’s media type.

## Use the graphical tool

1. Search Windows for **Defragment and Optimize Drives**.
2. Select the correct volume and choose Analyze when available.
3. Choose Optimize and allow Windows to apply the operation appropriate to the media.

## Use an elevated command prompt

` defrag C: /A /U /Vdefrag C: /O /U /V `

` /A ` analyzes the volume. ` /O ` performs the proper optimization for each media type, while ` /U ` shows progress and ` /V ` provides verbose statistics. Network drives are not supported.

## With Screensie

Screensie does not label this as a one-click repair. An authorized technician can use Command Center’s confirmed CMD console to run the standard ` defrag ` command and receive bounded output without taking over the screen. Use PCInfo first to confirm the drive and free space.

## Common questions

**How do I optimize a Windows drive?**

Open Defragment and Optimize Drives, select the correct local volume, and choose Optimize. From an elevated command prompt, defrag C: /O /U /V lets Windows choose the operation appropriate to that media type.

**Can I analyze a drive before changing it?**

Yes. Run defrag C: /A /U /V to analyze the selected local volume and review the report. Replace C: only after confirming the intended drive; network drives are not supported.

## Use the right tool remotely

Inspect storage in PCInfo, then run only the confirmed operation you intend.
